Full-time, experienced assistant sustainability and environmental manager required to support projects and programmes in Mace’s defence & national security sector. This role is based at Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. The successful candidate will join the existing responsible business team for MACE in the UK and deliver client-facing consultancy services including advisory, management and co-ordination of various environmental management, sustainability, and social value related activities. This role will support Mace’s wider corporate ambitions to reduce client carbon emissions by 10 million tonnes, generate £700m value to society, and deliver 500 hectares of new biodiversity net gain by 2026.

Hybrid working is considered for this role. However, site attendance is required in line with project programme and priorities, a minimum of 3 days per week on site.

You’ll Be Responsible For

  • Site based support to the project team to ensure environmental protection and compliance on site.
  • Support the development of client climate change, sustainability and/or social value strategies on individual projects, including agreeing project outcomes and ensuring their delivery by the project team.
  • Become a technical expert and promote innovation in a particular area of sustainability, such as waste, energy/carbon, water, responsible sourcing of materials, sustainable buildings, etc.
  • At the same time, this person should be a pro-active generalist, able to cover all key issues of sustainability and environmental management with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the collation and reporting of project data, to inform and report against key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Support the delivery and management of the environmental management system.
  • Support management, coordination and delivery of site environmental training.
  • Support the review and update of environmental documentation, including on site environmental monitoring records and data (e.g., waste, water, noise).
  • Support work winning through bid support, innovation, and client liaison.
  • Support the drive for Mace to be a leader in climate change and sustainability.
  • Manage an environmental and sustainability campaigns register and responsible for creation of environmental engagement campaigns throughout the year.
  • Develop innovation and best practice, including clearly communicating these to the wider business and our clients.
  • Drive environmental and sustainability performance with contractors and the supply chain via the production of case studies, best practices and learning from experience case reports to promote continuous improvement.
  • Lead the development of environmental behaviour and culture with the site teams and supply chain partners.
  • Help instigate, implement and oversee a programme of regular environmental inspections and implement the environmental performance measurement, review and reporting requirements.
  • Co-operate with auditors during environmental audits and implement corrective actions resulting from any non-conformances.
  • Support with the compilation and production of evidence to satisfy DREAM/BREEAM requirements.
  • Support with the management and assurance of site environmental compliance in line with legal environmental consents, permits and licences.

You’ll Need To Have

  • Experience in working in a site-based construction role (desirable)
  • Practical experience of working in Infrastructure (e.g., rail, highways, aviation, defence, energy, utilities, nuclear)
  • Experience of working with a range of stakeholders (e., project team, design team members, regulators, contractors, and supply chain) and demonstration of stakeholder management
  • Be able to tailor and communicate technical topics to a range of stakeholders and articulate the value of environmental management and sustainability.
  • Experience of driving culture change and leading the development of environmental behaviour with a range of stakeholders (e.g., site teams, supply chain).
  • Knowledge of sustainable building design and net zero carbon strategies.
  • Experience of supporting design teams to understand and respond to environmental constraints and opportunities to maximise positive environmental benefits.
  • Knowledge of, and experience, developing and implementing environmental management systems (EMS) and ISO14001 requirements. This includes completing relevant performance reporting.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

You’ll Also Have

  • Expertise in one or more environmental topics (waste, water, energy, carbon, responsible sourcing, building design, biodiversity, circular economy etc).
  • Experience of championing environmental management and sustainability and being a leader, encouraging behavioural change throughout the business and driving relevant environmental and sustainability initiatives and assessments.
  • Bid support – support work winning/bidding.
