Wood is currently recruiting for an Automation Engineers (AE) to support across various high-profile projects in the UK. The AE will join our Systems Integration team within our Digital Consulting business.
This role is based out of our Northampton office on a hybrid bases within the ability to travel to client sites when required.
Please note applicants must be able to pass HMG Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) check.
The Role
This is an exciting opportunity for an experience Automation Engineer to join a high preforming team and support the success of upcoming projects across the UK in 2025.
We are seeking to hear from individuals who have engineering experience within Automation and Controls projects, who are driven by solving complex technical challenges for our clients.
As an experienced Automation Engineer, you will support the implementation of projects in line with company objectives including continuous improvement of margin, customer satisfaction, schedule, working capital and safety performance.

Our Systems Integration (SI) team, work with a variety of high-profile clients across the energy sector. Delivering bespoke essential automation and control solutions that enable a safer and more efficient operation.
Within SI, we are architecting our clients' digital ecosystems to be inherently safe, cybersecure and operable. Within our teams we integrate client source systems across their IT, Operational Technology (OT) environments, securely pushing OT data into IT systems as a foundation for transformation.
We design and integrate operational technology to achieve business, production, and operational goals.

Responsibilities
The key objectives for this role are:
- Performs a variety of routine tasks that are planned to provide experience and familiarisation with the engineering staff and the methods, practices, and programs of the company
- Provides straightforward solutions to problems using readily available, clear, and direct references
- Collects and evaluates data and develops plans for assignments that may involve design application
- Has a keen interest in PLC’s, DCS’s, Safety Systems and Graphics (Human Machine Interfaces) and wants to develop these configuration skills further
- Prepares simple plans and designs, calculations, and bills of material in accordance with established specifications
- Carries out routine analysis and works in accordance with instructions
- Assists more experienced technical personnel with specific aspects of more complex tasks
- Assist with the specification and selection of equipment to meet project criteria
- Initiate the exchange of required technical concepts and information with the Design staff and other disciplines
- Assignments typically involve individual project phases or projects of limited scope
- Prepares reports on their assignments and makes recommendations on the solution of technical problems within the scope of assignment
- Assignments often involve basic technical observations, analysis, and modifications of simple components
- Participates in design reviews eg. as note-taker

Expected
- Bachelor's degree or a master's degree in an engineering discipline
- Previous experience working in a project delivery environment
- Previous experience and competency in Automation and Control Engineering
- Previous experience in writing software specifications
- Detailed experience with multiple system implementation projects and / or control system platforms
- Previous experience of addressable F&G systems
- Previous experience of Microsoft SQL
- A sound understanding of engineering practices, methodologies and economic principles, calculation methods, design details, international codes and standards, procedures, and specifications
- Knowledge of modern automation and control applications, tools, methodologies
- Strong planning, organising and execution skills
Desirable
- Professional Engineer or engineering chartership preferred
- Rockwell PLC and SCADA systems experience
- Experience of Inductive Automation Ignition SCADA
