Location

ONS operates a flexible hybrid working model across the UK, with colleagues linked to one of our contractual locations in Newport, Titchfield (Fareham) or Manchester and working between office and remote throughout the week.

As part of the hybrid working arrangement there is 40% a minimum office attendance requirement. Attendance is typically at your contractual office, with occasional travel to alternative locations. Due to estates constraints, there are currently temporary exceptions to this for colleagues based at Manchester who are required to attend the office for a minimum of 20% of their work time.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering a range of key economic, social and demographic topics. These include measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating the size, geographic distribution and characteristics of the population, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration.

We are looking for experienced Business Architect to join our Business Design and Architecture team. Business Architecture is still relatively new to the organisation, so its an exciting time to join us and help shape the function and share with people across the organisation the value this function can bring. We are looking for people who thrive on a challenge, love to solve complex problems and have an ability to communicate architecture in a simple and easy to understand way.

Job Description

A Business Architect develops an integrated view of an enterprise, such as a business area or organisation. They use this view to help their organisation put its strategy in place.

In this role, you will:

  • Understand and apply business architectural principles, techniques, and tools to business challenges.
  • Ensure design work from projects and programmes aligns with strategy.
  • Ensure business change is implemented effectively to meet strategy.
  • Aggregate and disaggregate complex information from across your organisation.
  • Communicate complex information about the organisation to stakeholders.


Our vision within the Business Design and Architecture team is to collaborate with others to design solutions from a true end to end perspective that meets end users’ and stakeholders needs. We work across ONS to support projects and programmes deliver successful change. We are currently working on the following programmes; Integrated Data Service (Cross Government analytical platform), the future of Population, Migration and Social statistics (including the future of Census) and transforming our Business Statistics.

Responsibilities

The Business Architect helps to shape the ‘Business Design’ from a people, process, information and technology perspective. They play a lead role in implementing the Vision & Strategy and are committed to continuous improvement and optimization.

A Business Architect uses their knowledge and experience to understand business scenarios, communicate the issues and recommend next steps. They support and guide other business architects.

At this role level, you will:

  • Support executive level work and management of the business architecture practice.
  • Guide others in using appropriate business architectural tools and methods.
  • Understand and apply business architectural principles, techniques, and tools to business scenarios.
  • Create business architecture artefacts, including abstract representations of the organisation, knowing when to apply them.
  • Develop standard and scalable models to collect, aggregate, or disaggregate complex information.

Essential Skills Criteria

  • Business Architecture - Apply and develop business architecture frameworks, principles, and techniques in your organisation. Advise and guide the organisation to inform the implementation of its strategy. Share the value of business architecture with the organisation. You can produce clear multidimensional views of your organisation to support decision making.
  • Methods and Tools - A ble to contribute or lead on the following: Motivation models, Operating Models, Business Model canvas, SWOT/PESTLE analysis, Strategy and Business Capability maturity assessments.
  • Communicating information - M ediate between people and mend relationships, communicating with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Stakeholder relationship management - Influence stakeholders and manage relationships effectively. Build long-term strategic relationships and communicate clearly and regularly with stakeholders.
  • Strategic design and business change - Support defining principles, patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps, and vision statements.
  • Strategic Thinking - Define strategies and policies, providing guidance to others on working in the strategic context. Evaluate current strategies to ensure business requirements are being met and exceeded where possible.

Your personal statement should be no longer than 1250 words. You should provide evidence for each essential skill criterion (and any technical criteria) listed in the person specification. Stage 2 – Interview

Interviews will take place 17/1/2025 and in all cases will be conducted by video/MS Teams.
