Job Title: Engineer – Materials Technology (Corrosion & Coatings)

Salary: From £35,802+ depending on skills and experience
What You’ll Be Doing
- Support the delivery of authoritative corrosion protection advice and guidance to all functions, in particular the Dreadnought and SSN AUKUS Coatings Functional Activities, Corrosion Transversal Activities, Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chain on emergent issues arising during submarine design, build, commissioning and in-service
- Provide support to the Corrosion & Coatings Lead with the development of the SSN AUKUS paint schedule through extensive testing, including sample preparation, test method proposals, data analysis, destructive quality testing and microscopic analysis
- Provide support to the Corrosion & Coatings Lead with the upkeep of relevant design documentation through design maturity, ensuring all Transversal and Functional aspects have been de-risked through appropriate mitigation strategies
- Support the review of supplier technical queries, contract deliverables and special processes related to corrosion prevention and protective coatings
- Support corrosion and coating related research activities through performing relevant artificial accelerated testing, electrochemical testing and laboratory-based activities. Support Research and Technology projects where required
Essential
Your skills and experiences:
- Qualified to degree level (BEng/BSc) in metallurgy, materials science or chemistry or similar degree with relevant experience
- Experience in conducting research and laboratory testing
- Understanding of inspection and testing processes gained through industrial experience
- Knowledge of the coating protective mechanisms to prevent corrosion
Desirable
- Awareness of preparing materials, paints and coating specifications for new designs
- Experience or working knowledge of relevant processes for surface preparation, material mixing (paints, adhesives), paint spraying and/or thermal metal spraying
- Membership of relevant professional institutions and working towards chartered status, and qualification to Level 1 or 2 as an ICorr Coating Inspector or equivalent

The Corrosion & Coatings Team
As an Engineer on this team, you will be working with a team of specialist engineers responsible for all aspects of corrosion management across multiple submarine programmes. You will work across all aspects of submarines, suppliers, manufacturing, design, and build. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
