About the role
The role is responsible for contributing to the design and development of coffee machines, ensuring they are reliable, functional and adhere to quality standards. This involves conducting research, creating technical drawings, participating in design reviews, and working closely with relevant R&D and cross-functional teams involved in coffee machine development to ensure alignment of features and requirements, contributing to feasibility assessment and prototypes development. Further, the role entails supporting research and evaluation of valuable partnership for material and components sourcing, and ensuring compliance to regulatory requirements and standards. Finally, the role requires tracking KPIs and metrics to measure the effectiveness of coffee machine mechanical design and components, monitoring trends, emerging technologies and best practices, and providing reports with key insights and updates to management for decision making.
Generally;
1. Contributes to the mechanical design and development of coffee machines, (e.g., bodywork, frame, tank) by participating in design reviews
2. Supports the development of prototypes by assisting with model creation to assess usability, functionality and reliability of the products.
3. Maintains equipment to ensure accurate and consistent prototype part creation
4. Performs equipment certification activities, ensuring compliance with quality standards, regulatory and safety requirements
5. Conducts research and analysis on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to prototype part creation to identify opportunities for improvement or innovation, providing relevant updates to management.
6. Performs routine repair and maintenance activities, replacing defective/blunt/worn parts, performing software updates or routine maintenance to prevent future problems.
7. Performs an initial diagnosis of machine failures, identifying root causes, defective components, and troubleshooting.
8. Keeps abreast with industry trends and emerging technologies, attending training sessions, workshops, or pursuing certifications to enhance competencies.
Specifically;
Support the Machines R&D team by the production/fabrication and assembly of mechanical components, prototypes, jigs and/or fixtures, specifically.
Operating machine tools & 3D Printers: Using various machine tools such as CNC mill, lathe, drill, press brake, laser profile cutter, grinding wheel, SLS, FDM and SLA 3D Printers and other machines to fabricate components.
Machine maintenance: Ensuring the proper maintenance and upkeep of workshop equipment, including regular inspections, cleaning, calibration, service/repair management as required.
Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving technical issues with machinery to minimize downtime and ensure efficient operations.
Reading and interpreting technical drawings and/or 3D CAD : Understanding engineering drawings/3D CAD and specifications to accurately fabricate parts and assemblies
Inspection: Use inspection and measurement tools to confirm components meet specification. (callipers, micrometer, CMM, etc)
Consulting with mechanical design engineers
Advise, consult and agree with design engineers, the most appropriate production method and design changes to aid manufacture.
Fabrication techniques: Employing various fabrication techniques, including machining, cutting, shaping, joining, and finishing, to create components.
Assembly: Assembling components into complete rigs, systems or prototypes according to design specifications.
Safety procedures: Adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries and proposing/implementing improvements in-line with best practices.
Risk assessments: Conducting risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate safety measures.
Training: Training others, such as students or junior engineers, on the safe and proper use of workshop equipment and techniques.
Stock control: Maintaining accurate records of workshop materials and supplies.
Ordering materials: Placing orders for necessary materials and equipment as needed.
Storage: Organizing and storing materials and tools in a safe and efficient manner in line with 5S best practices.
Ordering outsourced prototypes: (As and when internal capabilities/capacity precludes the internal manufacturer of a part or parts), Selection of appropriate suppliers and placing of orders for externally manufactured parts as required.
