Our global data protection team is seeking a qualified data protection lawyer to advise on and coordinate data protection matters, in particular, to assist with the completion of complex data protection impact assessments (“PIAs”) of EY’s global systems and applications as well as advising the business on privacy, confidentiality, artificial intelligence and data protection matters and also overseeing the work of other resources and EY’s Global Delivery Service (“GDS”) involved in the completion of PIAs. The global data protection team is responsible for the implementation and transformation of EY’s privacy compliance program, which include Binding Corporate Rules. The team works closely with all parts of the business on data protection matters, including both personal data privacy, artificial intelligence and the protection of client and EY confidential information.
Position summary:
As the Global Legal Counsel – Advisory and Privacy Impact Assessments, you will be responsible for overseeing the Global PIA intake and triaging process and the completion of privacy impact assessments for EY’s global systems and applications (including privacy impact assessments of a complex nature). Also, to provide legal advice to Service Lines / Sub Service Lines regarding the requirement of completion of Privacy Impact Assessments and broader confidentiality, artificial intelligence and data protection risks.
You will be working closely with business stakeholders, the other members of the global data protection team, and EY Regional/Local Privacy Leaders as well as overseeing data protection resources in EY’s GDS locations in India, China, Argentina and Poland.
Essential functions of the job:
- Implement EY’s global PIA program including overseeing the Global PIA intake and triaging process and providing advice regarding the completion of more complex PIAs and overseeing other resources (including EY’s GDS team) involved in the completion of PIAs;
- Work as Legal Advisor and PIA POC for one of EY´s Global Service Lines (Tax, Assurance, Consulting or Strategy and Transactions) to help understand their development pipeline of new tools and support privacy by design development.
- Support the ongoing transformation of the PIA process to work efficiently within the global EY organization on a data protection management platform and adapt to new regulatory frameworks such as for AI technologies.
- Communicate effectively and consistently with key stakeholders (EY Service Line personnel, Global IT, General Counsel’s Office, Risk Management, Talent, IT and Service Line representatives);
- Work with a team of data protection resources globally throughout EY;
- Raise awareness among EY personnel globally regarding the importance of compliance with data protection regulations and EY’s own privacy compliance program;
- Identify legal and regulatory risks surrounding global data protection issues and implement solutions to mitigate such risks;
- Respond to requests from business stakeholders relating to applicable data protection legislation;
- Escalate to the Global Data Protection Leader any significant compliance issues and plans for their resolution, as well as implications of local data protection regulations applicable throughout EY globally;
- Provide general support to the global data protection team.
Knowledge, competency and skill requirements:
- Must be legally qualified and holding a current practicing certificate;
- Ideally between 3-5 years of relevant experience (including proven experience in the field of data protection in cross border situations (including conducting complex PIAs));
- Ideally, in house experience (either gained in an in-house role or through secondments);
- Solid knowledge in EU data protection legislation (specifically the GDPR) and ideally familiarity with the legislation of one or more other jurisdictions.
- Ideally, internationally recognized privacy certification, such as CIPP/E, CIPT and CIPM;
- Strong project management skills;
- Excellent command of the English language;
- Sensitivity to intercultural contacts and communication.
