UL Solutions' SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) team is hiring! We require a Laboratory Technician for our laboratory in Basingstoke, which is a centre of excellent for EMC & Wireless communication testing. The best labs in the country!
The SAR team is responsible for testing consumer electronic products for the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a radio frequency electromagnetic field. You will play a vital role in ensuring the products people use around the global on a daily basis , are safe.
As a Laboratory Technician you will be working within a large team, responsible for setting up test equipment and carrying out testing on a range of different consumer electronic products.

Responsibilities
- Responsible for the setup and performance of equipment and test setups for clients.
- Builds and/or adapts setup and test equipment for performance of tests.
- Examines test samples and reads blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, measuring instruments, and operational instructions.
- Follows basically defined test plans and datasheets.
- Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results.
- Records and explains test results and completes test report.
- Examines less complex customer samples and learns to operate appropriate tests for each case with necessary supervision/support.
- Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.
- Operates designated machines and special laboratory equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance of designated test equipment and laboratory area.
- May perform basic calibration of test equipment.
- Reads and understands specific test standards and testing technology for scope of responsibility with necessary supervision/support.
- Initiates recommendations for new equipment designs and recommends solutions to observed test problems.
- Communicates with management and technical staff to provide suggestions for new equipment, processes, and forms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.
- To undertake chargeable testing, report writing and other consulting duties.
- To assist the team in maintaining accreditation standards such as; equipment and site maintenance, ensure adequate record keeping, assist the other Engineers, and expediting technical reports.
- To update the company work monitoring systems with accurate details and job status for each item of work for which the Engineer/Technician is responsible
Qualifications
- Degree educated, ideally in a relatable degree such as Engineering, Science-related, Electronics or Electrical Engineering
- At least 6 months' experience in a SAR laboratory, performing hands-on testing of electronic devices. You may have just finished an Internship, or have gained 6 months experience in your first role and you're now seeking to move your career forward.
- You'll be familiar with setting up equipment ready for testing
- A passion for technology is important, as we'll need you to love what you do
- Able to work independently, but also as part of a large and collaborative team
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. It's also important that you can communicate professionally with customers on a regular basis.
- Good IT skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Office products
