Luton Council has been selected to deliver the government’s Families First for Children Pathfinder programme. Luton is one of seven new areas in the second wave to be chosen with the aim of protecting vulnerable children from harm and improving services to help more children stay with their families in safe and loving homes.

The programme is an amazing opportunity for Luton to shape future social care practice, which includes closer working relationships with our health, police, education and voluntary sector partners.

Children are at the heart of everything we do in Luton, and we are very proud of the tremendous work that is already taking place together with our partners, including the development of our Family Hubs and working towards making Luton a child-friendly town where our children and young people can grow up feeling happy, healthy and secure.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about safeguarding and championing the welfare of children and young people. Do you have the expertise and leadership skills to drive change in the education sector? We are seeking an experienced and dedicated professional to join our Multi-Agency Child Protection Team (MACPT) as the Education Lead.

Education

This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in safeguarding and child protection within a multi-agency framework. As the Education Lead, you will:

  • Act as a recognised expert in safeguarding and child protection.
  • Collaborate with Children, Families & Education, Police, and Health partners to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people.
  • Champion the role of education as a key safeguarding partner in child protection efforts.
  • Engage and represent the education sector in the Pathfinder programme, ensuring its voice is heard and progress is communicated effectively.
  • Lead on investigations and decision-making in cases of significant harm.
  • Drive the rollout of the Families First for Children Pathfinder reforms across educational environments.
  • Offer professional educational advice and ensure standards of practice set by the Department for Education are upheld.

About You

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Extensive safeguarding expertise, with significant experience working with children and families in education, focusing on wellbeing and child protection.
  • Proven ability to make critical decisions in complex child protection cases and ensure statutory responsibilities are met.
  • Strong leadership skills and a proactive approach to building partnerships with statutory and voluntary sector agencies.
  • Demonstrable ability to audit and review schools’ safeguarding systems, ensuring compliance and resolving issues effectively.
  • In-depth knowledge of multi-agency safeguarding, including key legislation and guidance such as Keeping Children Safe in Education (2023), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), and Section 175 of the Education Act (2002).
  • The capability to act swiftly under pressure and manage tight deadlines in high-stakes situations.

Your expertise and collaborative approach will be vital to ensuring the safety and well-being of children and young people.

Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.
