Platform Engineer

About the team

The Five Platform team enables our product teams to create products that meet the high quality our customers expect.

We design, implement, and maintain software frameworks and cloud infrastructure that are used in the development, deployment, and operation of Five's services and software.

We work closely with product teams to help them solve interesting challenges around architecture, deployment, security, scaling, reliability, performance, and observability.

We believe in promoting DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, and other industry best practices in a way that makes sense for our organisation.

What you will do

As a Platform Engineer, you'll contribute to the design, implementation, and review of new features and changes whilst ensuring we maintain high technical standards across our architecture and code.

You will contribute to the cloud infrastructure that supports Five's product workloads. This includes our Kubernetes clusters in Azure; observability tools such as Prometheus, Sentry, Grafana, and Loki; and security tools such as Vault, cloud IAM, OAuth2 infrastructure, and ingresses.

You will also contribute to tooling which supports the development and deployment of Five's software products (the majority of which are Python / FastAPI applications). This includes our Python libraries for auth and observability; a few small Python services of our own; and templates / libraries for CI/CD, IaC, and new services.

You don't need to be familiar with all of the technology mentioned above, but you should be enthusiastic to learn and to help us improve. You’ll have the opportunity to share knowledge within the team and across Five through the Engineering and Architecture guilds.

About you

• You have a wealth of industry experience with a good mix of backend software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and architecture experience.
• You're familiar with the challenges of building and operating distributed systems and with patterns to address these challenges.
• You are product-minded and believe in building well-documented tools that solve problems for our customers.
