Location: Granta Park, Cambridge UK  

Salary range: £47,000 - £57,000 per annum  

Functional area: R&D, P&E group 

Reports to: Instrumentation Design Manager 

 

Sphere Fluidics, a leader in single cell analysis and isolation technologies, seeks a passionate and results-oriented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing team.

Leveraging our picodroplet microfluidic technology, we offer high-throughput solutions for single cell isolation and analysis across various applications, including biologics discovery, cell engineering, and synthetic biology. The Role: 

For this role we are seeking an experienced and versatile Mechanical Design Engineer to contribute to the design and development of new scientific instruments.  Reporting to the Instrumentation Design Manager in R&D you will be part of a multi-disciplinary development team that design, prototype, test and transfer into manufacture unique life science instruments.  The role covers the whole design lifecycle, from concept to prototype build and test, to initial production of finished instruments. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Develop designs from concept to detailed solutions through to manufacture 
  • Use your technical knowledge to create design solutions to precise and challenging mechanical requirements 
  • Mentor less experienced design engineers in the group 
  • Present ideas through sketches and rendered models 
  • Source prototype parts and liaise with suppliers  
  • Assemble and test prototypes 
  • Create and maintain design documentation 
  • Deliver design work to project schedules 

  

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • Degree / HND in mechanical engineering or similar 
  • Comprehensive SolidWorks experience – 3 years minimum 
  • Good familiarity with SolidWorks PDM 
  • Experience of product development in a high technology industry – 5 years minimum 
  • Practice in design using a wide range of manufacturing techniques from sheet metal fabrication to injection moulding 
  • Experience of rapid prototyping for design validation and finished parts 
  • Hands-on ability to build, test and troubleshoot 
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
