Department Oncology Research

Key Responsibilities We have an opportunity in our Research Group for a 12-month placement (Year in industry). We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals who would relish the chance to learn from Immunocore’s cutting edge science and corporate growth.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Approved Standard-of-Care (SoC) medicines (incl. chemotherapy, kinase inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors) extend patient survival, although relapse and resistance are common. Deeper understanding of the biology that fuels tumorigenesis, and better ways of modelling disease, are essential to generate more efficacious medicines.

Patient derived organoids (PDOs) are ex vivo 3D models derived from adult stem cells (ASCs) that recapitulate aspects of tumour biology not always possible to reproduce in 2D cancer cell lines. The candidate would help expand our normal and cancer PDO disease modelling capabilities by leveraging in-house expertise and outputs from our external collaborations. Robust workflows will be implemented to derive/grow PDO models from ASCs. Models will be characterised using a range of techniques including microscopy and flow cytometry. The candidate will engineer PDOs to harbour cell states known to drive disease and implement advanced immune co-culture assays. The effect of SoC and ImmTAC redirected T-cell activation on normal and cancer PDO models will be explored to understand our ability to kill tumour cells whilst sparing normal cell subsets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Characterize PDO morphology, viability, and growth conditions.
  • Phenotype PDOs using advanced imaging techniques and flow cytometry.
  • Contribute to external collaborations, assess reproducibility, and implement learnings to generate PoC data in-house.
  • Assess and establish co-culture systems
  • Assess the effect of ImmTAC and SoC molecules on tumour killing and cell populations within the PDOs.

Education & Qualifications

Undertaking (currently in second year and looking for a year in industry) BSc. in Biological or Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, or Immunology.

What will you receive?
